A disclaimer for life?
By Michael Camarata
We have all seen legal disclaimers, snippets of legal data posted at the beginning of books and designed to protect authors and their publishers from getting sued for misrepresentation. But when was the last time that you really took a look at one? A common book disclaimer goes something like this: This is a work of fiction. All names and characters are either the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, are purely coincidental. One of my favorite quotes comes not from a speech, essay or the body of a work of fiction. It comes from a disclaimer. In Timequake (1997), by Kurt Vonnegut, the disclaimer simply reads: “All persons, living and dead, are purely coincidental.” |
